The species Mycoplasma phocidae was originally described and validly published by Ruhnke and Madoff 1992. Heldtander Königsson et al. corrected this name from Mycoplasma phocidae (sic) to Mycoplasma phocae . In 2018, Gupta et al. established Mycoplasma phocidae as the basonym of
Metamycoplasma phocae (Ruhnke and Madoff 1992) Gupta et al. 2018
