The species Mycoplasma synoviae was originally described by Olson et al. 1964. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Jordan et al. published an emended description of this species in 1982. In 2018, Gupta et al. established as the basonym of (Olson et al. 1964) Gupta et al. 2018 .
