Proper Form
| Eperythrozoon coccoides Schilling 1928 (Approved Lists 1980) |
Nomenclatural History
|
The species Eperythrozoon coccoides was originally described by Schilling 1928. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 2005, Neimark et al. established Eperythrozoon coccoides as the basonym of
Mycoplasma coccoides (Schilling 1928) Neimark et al. 2005
.
Mycoplasma coccoides was published in a Request for an Opinion by Neimark et al. 2005. It is proposed as a replacement name for Eperythrozoon coccoides based on a 16S analysis which classified the organism as a Mycoplasma instead of a Rickettsia.
The proposal of Mycoplasma coccoides is illegitimate because it contravenes:
a) the rule that requires authors to provide evidence that the type strain has been deposited in two separate recognized culture collections in different countries (there is no existing type material and the original name E. coccoides predates the concept of candidates)
b) rule 28(b) of the International Code of Nomenclature of Bacteria: it was published as a request for an opinion without which the name can not be validated.
c)it eliminates a validly published name
