The phylum Thermodesulfobacteria was originally proposed by Garrity and Holt 2001. This name was validly published by Oren and Garrity 2021. Whitman et al. corrected this name from (sic) to . established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of Waite et al. 2020 in 2015.
