The species Bacillus gordonae was originally described by Pichinoty et al. 1986. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 23 in 1987. In 1993, Ash et al. established Bacillus gordonae as the basonym of
Paenibacillus gordonae (Pichinoty et al. 1987) Ash et al. 1994
