The species Bacillus polymyxa was originally described by Macé 1889. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1993, Ash et al. established as the basonym of (Prażmowski 1880) Ash et al. 1994 emend. Kwak et al. 2020 .
