The phylum Deinococcus-Thermus was originally proposed by Weisburg et al. 1989. This name was validly published by Oren and Garrity 2021. Whitman et al. corrected this name from (sic) to .

Weisburg et al. 1989 is the earliest occurrence of the name applied to a phylum, but since it was purely a phylogenetic study the taxon lacked a description until Garrity and Holt 2001 (p.26).
