The species Listeria murrayi was originally described by Welshimer and Meredith 1971. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Rocourt et al. transferred the members of
Listeria grayi Errebo Larsen and Seeliger 1966 (Approved Lists 1980)
into this species in 1992.
