The species Planococcus alkanoclasticus was originally described by Engelhardt et al. 2001. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 81 in 2001. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 81 in 2008. In 2005, Dai et al. established Planococcus alkanoclasticus as the basonym of
Planomicrobium alkanoclasticum (Engelhardt et al. 2001) Dai et al. 2005
.
Gupta and Patel 2019 effectively reverse the placement of this species into Planomicrobium by Dai et al. 2005.
