The species Marinococcus halophilus was originally described by Hao et al. 1984. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 19 in 1985. Hao et al. formed this name in 1984 by placing the species
Planococcus halophilus Novitsky and Kushner 1976 (Approved Lists 1980)
into the genus Marinococcus Hao et al. 1985 emend. Wang et al. 2009.
