The subspecies Staphylococcus capitis capitis was originally described by Kloos and Schleifer 1975. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1991, Bannerman and Kloos reduced Kloos and Schleifer 1975 (Approved Lists 1980) to the rank of subspecies.
