The species Staphylococcus chromogenes was originally described by Hájek et al. 1986. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 23 in 1987. List Editor elevated the subspecies Devriese et al. 1978 (Approved Lists 1980) to the rank of species to form this name in 1987.
