The subspecies Staphylococcus sciuri lentus was originally described by Kloos et al. 1976. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Schleifer et al. elevated this subspecies to the rank of species to form the name (Kloos et al. 1976) Schleifer et al. 1983 in 1983.
