The family Lactobacillaceae was originally proposed by Winslow et al. 1917. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Zheng et al. published an emended description of this family in 2020. Zheng et al. transferred the members of Schleifer 2010 into this family in 2020.
