Nomenclatural History

The subspecies Lactobacillus delbrueckii lactis was originally described by Weiss et al. 1983. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 14 in 1984. Weiss et al. established this name as a later heterotypic synonym of
Lactobacillus leichmannii (Henneberg 1903) Bergey et al. 1923 (Approved Lists 1980)
in 1983. In 1983, Weiss et al. reduced
Lactobacillus lactis (Orla-Jensen 1919) Bergey et al. 1934 (Approved Lists 1980)
to the rank of subspecies.
