The species Lactobacillus cellobiosus was originally described by Rogosa et al. 1953. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Dellaglio et al. established this name as a later heterotypic synonym of Beijerinck 1901 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Dellaglio et al. 2004 in 2004.
