The species Lactobacillus divergens was originally described by Holzapfel and Gerber 1983. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 14 in 1984. In 1987, Collins et al. established Lactobacillus divergens as the basonym of
Carnobacterium divergens (Holzapfel and Gerber 1984) Collins et al. 1987
