The species Lactobacillus kunkeei was originally described by Edwards et al. 1998. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 67 in 1998. Endo et al. published an emended description of this species in 2012. In 2020, Zheng et al. established Lactobacillus kunkeei as the basonym of
Apilactobacillus kunkeei (Edwards et al. 1998) Zheng et al. 2020
