The species Lactobacillus lactis was originally described by Bergey et al. 1934. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1983, Weiss et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Orla-Jensen 1919) Weiss et al. 1984 .
