The species Lactobacillus leichmannii was originally described by Bergey et al. 1923. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Weiss et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of
Lactobacillus delbrueckii lactis (Orla-Jensen 1919) Weiss et al. 1984
in 1983.
