The species Abiotrophia elegans was originally described by Roggenkamp et al. 1998. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 68 in 1999. In 2000, Collins and Lawson established Abiotrophia elegans as the basonym of
Granulicatella elegans (Roggenkamp et al. 1999) Collins and Lawson 2000
.
