Nomenclatural History

The species Enterococcus durans was originally described by Sherman and Wing 1937. It pre-dated the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names but was excluded from those lists. In 1984 the name was revived and validly published by Collins et al.. Collins et al. formed this name in 1984 by placing the species
Streptococcus durans (ex Sherman and Wing 1937) Knight et al. 1984
into the genus Enterococcus (ex Thiercelin and Jouhaud 1903) Schleifer and Kilpper-Bälz 1984.
