The species Enterococcus faecium was originally described and validly published by Schleifer and Kilpper-Bälz 1984. Schleifer and Kilpper-Bälz formed this name in 1984 by placing the species Orla-Jensen 1919 (Approved Lists 1980) into the genus (ex Thiercelin and Jouhaud 1903) Schleifer and Kilpper-Bälz 1984.
