The species Leuconostoc cremoris was originally described by Garvie 1960. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1983, Garvie reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Knudsen and Sørensen 1929) Garvie 1983 .
