The species Streptococcus anginosus was originally described by Smith and Sherman 1938. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Whiley and Beighton published an emended description of this species in 1991. In 2013, Jensen et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form
