The species Streptococcus iniae was originally described by Pier and Madin 1976. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Eldar et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of
Streptococcus shiloi Eldar et al. 1995
in 1995.
