The subspecies Streptococcus lactis lactis was originally described and validly published by Garvie and Farrow 1982. In 1982, Garvie and Farrow reduced
Streptococcus lactis (Lister 1873) Löhnis 1909 (Approved Lists 1980)
to the rank of subspecies. In 1986, List Editor established Streptococcus lactis lactis as the basonym of
Lactococcus lactis lactis (Lister 1873) Schleifer et al. 1986
