The species Streptococcus phocae was originally described and validly published by Skaar et al. 1994. Avendaño-Herrera et al. published an emended description of this species in 2014. In 2014, Avendaño-Herrera et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Skaar et al. 1994) Avendaño-Herrera et al. 2014 .
