The subspecies Streptococcus salivarius thermophilus was originally described by Farrow and Collins 1984. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 15 in 1984. In 1984, Farrow and Collins reduced
Streptococcus thermophilus Orla-Jensen 1919 (Approved Lists 1980)
to the rank of subspecies.
