Proper Form
| Streptococcus thermophilus Orla-Jensen 1919 (Approved Lists 1980) |
Nomenclatural History
|
The species Streptococcus thermophilus was originally described by Orla-Jensen 1919. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1984, Farrow and Collins reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form
Streptococcus salivarius thermophilus (Orla-Jensen 1919) Farrow and Collins 1984
.
Schleifer et al. "revived" Streptococcus thermophilus (Validation List 54). This was not a legitimate event because Streptococcus thermophilus was already validly published on the Approved Lists 1980. This contravene Rules 28 and 35 of the Code. Both the species and subspecies names are considered to be Validly Published.
