The order Rubrobacterales was originally proposed by 1997. This name was validly published by Stackebrandt et al. 1997. Reddy and Garcia-Pichel published an emended description of this order in 2009. Subsequent emendations were proposed by Zhi et al. in 2009 and Foesel et al. in 2016.
