The species Brevibacterium liquefaciens was originally described by Okabayashi and Masuo 1960. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1980, Lanéelle et al. established as the basonym of (Okabayashi and Masuo 1960) Lanéelle et al. 1980 . Gelsomino et al. established this name as a later heterotypic synonym of Giovannozzi-Sermanni 1959 (Approved Lists 1980) in 2004.
