The species Brevibacterium testaceum was originally described by Komagata and Iizuka 1964. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1980, Skerman et al. established as the basonym of (Komagata and Iizuka 1964) Yamada and Komagata 1972 (Approved Lists 1980) . In 1983, Collins et al. established as the basonym of (Komagata and Iizuka 1964) Collins et al. 1983 .
