This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 19 in 1985. The species Microbacterium arborescens was originally described by Frankland and Frankland 1889. It pre-dated the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names but was excluded from those lists. In 1984 the name was revived by Imai et al..
