The species Microbacterium imperiale was originally described by Collins et al. 1983. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 11 in 1983. Collins et al. formed this name in 1983 by placing the species
Brevibacterium imperiale (Steinhaus 1941) Breed 1953 (Approved Lists 1980)
into the genus Microbacterium Orla-Jensen 1919 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Fidalgo et al. 2016.
