The species Clavibacter tritici was originally described and validly published by Davis et al. 1984. Davis et al. formed this name in 1984 by placing the species
Corynebacterium tritici (ex Hutchinson 1917) Carlson and Vidaver 1982
into the genus Clavibacter Davis et al. 1984. In 1993, Zgurskaya et al. established Clavibacter tritici as the basonym of
Rathayibacter tritici (Carlson and Vidaver 1982) Zgurskaya et al. 1993
