The species Corynebacterium poinsettiae was originally described by Burkholder 1948. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1982, Carlson and Vidaver reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form
Corynebacterium flaccumfaciens poinsettiae (Starr and Pirone 1942) Carlson and Vidaver 1982
