This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 54 in 1995. The species Corynebacterium ulcerans was originally described by Gilbert and Stewart 1927. It pre-dated the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names but was excluded from those lists. In 1995 the name was revived by Riegel et al..
