The species Mycobacterium intracellulare was originally described by Runyon 1965. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Castejon et al. published an emended description of this species in 2018. In 2018, Castejon et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form
Mycobacterium intracellulare intracellulare (Cuttino and McCabe 1949) Castejon et al. 2018
. Nouioui et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of
Mycobacterium paraintracellulare Lee et al. 2016 emend. Nouioui et al. 2018
in 2018.
