The species Mycobacterium paratuberculosis was originally described by Bergey et al. 1923. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1990, Thorel et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Bergey et al. 1923) Thorel et al. 1990 .
