The species Mycobacterium smegmatis was originally described by Lehmann and Neumann 1899. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Nouioui et al. published an emended description of this species in 2018. In 2018, Gupta et al. established as the basonym of (Trevisan 1889) Gupta et al. 2018 .
