The species Rhodococcus terrae was originally described by Tsukamura 1974. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1988, Stackebrandt et al. established Rhodococcus terrae as the basonym of
Gordonia terrae corrig. (Tsukamura 1971) Stackebrandt et al. 1989 emend. Nouioui et al. 2018
