The subspecies Propionibacterium freudenreichii freudenreichii was originally described by van Niel 1928. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 86 in 2008. In 1970, Moore and Holdeman reduced
Propionibacterium freudenreichii van Niel 1928 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Nouioui et al. 2018
to the rank of subspecies.
