The species Propionibacterium innocuum was originally described by Pitcher and Collins 1991. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 41 in 1992. In 1994, Yokota et al. established Propionibacterium innocuum as the basonym of
Propioniferax innocua (Pitcher and Collins 1992) Yokota et al. 1994
.
