The family Nocardioidaceae was originally proposed by Nesterenko et al. 1985. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 34 in 1990. published an emended description of this family in 1997. Subsequent emendations were proposed by Zhi et al. in 2009 and Nouioui et al. in 2018.
