The subspecies Streptomyces griseus griseus was originally described by Waksman and Henrici 1948. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1980, Skerman et al. reduced (Krainsky 1914) Waksman and Henrici 1948 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Nouioui et al. 2018 to the rank of subspecies.
