The species Sulfolobus shibatae was originally described by Grogan et al. 1990. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 38 in 1991. In 2018, Sakai and Kurosawa established as the basonym of (Grogan et al. 1991) Sakai and Kurosawa 2018 .
