The species Sulfolobus solfataricus was originally described by Zillig et al. 1980. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 5 in 1980. In 2018, Sakai and Kurosawa established as the basonym of (Zillig et al. 1980) Sakai and Kurosawa 2018 .
