The genus Acidianus was originally proposed and validly published by Segerer et al. 1986. De Vos and Trüper corrected this name from (sic) to . Plumb et al. published an emended description of this genus in 2007. Fuchs et al. transferred the members of Zillig et al. 1987 into this genus in 1996.
