The species Chlorobium tepidum was originally described by Wahlund et al. 1991. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 59 in 1996. In 2003, Imhoff established Chlorobium tepidum as the basonym of
Chlorobaculum tepidum (Wahlund et al. 1996) Imhoff 2003
